Susan Shively Burkhalter, Music Educator and Organist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
Commencing piano lessons at the age of seven, Ms. Burkhalter fell deeply in love with music and eventually found her way to the organ. Upon attaining a Bachelor of Music from the College of Wooster in 1970, she took on her first professional role as an organist and choir director at Olivet Episcopal Church in 1976. Similarly, Ms. Burkhalter had also been the children’s choir director at Our Savior Lutheran Church and School in 1997 and 1998 and the organist and choir director at Grace Reformed United Church of Christ in 2001. Between 2001 and 2014, she excelled as an organist at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, the Lutheran Church of Abiding Presence and First Church of Christ Scientist. In addition to these roles, Ms. Burkhalter offered her services as a piano and organ teacher from 1976 to 2008, currently working as a substitute organist director since 2015.
Alongside her teaching, Ms. Burkhalter has performed in numerous concert halls and created a professionally recorded CD, “Susan Burkhalter, Organist/Pianist” from 2011. A contributor to publications such as The Washington Post, The American Organist and Psychology Today, among others, she had also served as an advisor to music majors at the College of Wooster, her alma mater, in 1995. To remain aware of her growing industry, Ms. Burkhalter is a member of the Music Teachers National Association and a former officer of the American Guild of Organists. Civically, she is involved with the Chevy Chase Women’s Club, Suburban Women’s Club of Montgomery County, Sierra Club, ASPCA, World Wildlife Fund, African Wildlife Fund and local schools. To attest to her legacy, Ms. Burkhalter is also listed in editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. In her spare time, she enjoys sewing, gardening, art and poetry.
