Growing up, Mr. Smith admired his teachers, all of whom eventually served as inspirations to pursue a career in education. Following his high school graduation, he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Washington in 1966. By 1971, Mr. Smith attained a Master’s degree in mathematics from San Diego State University, proceeding to further his education with a Bachelor of Science in information and computer science from the University of California, Irvine.
Mr. Smith’s first professional endeavor as an educator was as a mathematics, science and English teacher at Highline School District in Washington. In the years that followed, he brought his skills to Kwajalein Junior and Senior High School, Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College. Today, Mr. Smith excels as a mathematics and computer science professor at Rancho Santiago Community College, where he has been since 1975. In 2015, as a testament to his professional success, Mr. Smith was awarded the John McFarland Journalist Award. Furthermore, his achievements are highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World.
