Dorothy J. Howell, JD, PhD, Adjunct Professor at Quinnipiac University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in microbiology, environmental law, and cultural ecology education.

Growing up in a coastal Connecticut town, Dr. Howell was inspired by nature to take on her various pursuits in science. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Goucher College in 1962, a Master of Science in Botany from the University of Connecticut in 1967 and completed graduate coursework at New York University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Howell commenced her career as a microbiologist for the Chicago Sanitary District in 1968, remaining until 1975. That same year, she achieved a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the John Marshall Law School in 1975, in which she was granted the John N. Jewett Prize for Highest Grade Average in First Year Studies and graduated cum laude. Dr. Howell went on to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois until 1976, an attorney for Borg-Wagner Corp. from 1976 to 1985 and an environmental counsel for Chemical Waste Management until 1987. At this time, she became a Bell and Howell Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Boston University’s Center for Technology and Policy.

In the second half of Dr. Howell’s career, she pivoted to the educational sector and was an adjunct professor of law at the Franklin Pierce Law Center for one year and a professor and administrator for the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School from 1988 to 1996. Between 1998 and 2007, she also taught at Antioch New England Graduate School, New Hampshire Community Technical College at Claremont and Connecticut’s Tunxis Community College. From there, Dr. Howell was the director of scholarly studies for the Quinnipiac Tribal Council Press and an exam scorer for the Educational Testing Service between 2002 and 2011, as well as an instructor at the Branford Hall Career Institute from 2004 to 2012. Notably, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Studies from Antioch New England in 2003 and has since served as an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University for 16 years. Congruent to her research, she is the author of numerous works, including Where You Can Hear the Sea and See the Sound from 2016. To attest to her legacy, Dr. Howell is also listed in the 20th edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
