Title: Retired English as Second Language Instructor
Location: Fountain Valley, California, United States

Nancy G. Boyer, PhD, Retired English as Second Language Instructor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in language education.

Inspired by her aunt, who was an American history and government teacher, Dr. Boyer had desired to become a teacher for as long as she can remember. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Oregon State University in 1972, she took on her first job as an English as a second language instructor (ESL) at the Briam Institute of American Cultural Center in Madrid, Spain. From there, Dr. Boyer went on to achieve a Master of Arts in teaching English as a second language from Brigham Young University in 1976, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in intercultural education from the University of Southern California in 1998.

Prior to her retirement in 2020, Dr. Boyer served as an English as a second language instructor at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California for nearly 30 years, from 1991 to 2020. She had also served in the same position at Pasadena City College in 1990 and 1991, Kuwait University from 1984 to 1990 and Arkansas State University in 1983 and 1984. Likewise, she worked in the same capacity for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and Laie, Hawaii between 1979 and 1983, as well as the Church College of Western Samoa in 1977 and 1978.

To remain abreast of her industry, Dr. Boyer maintains affiliation with the California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. In her career, she has most enjoyed working with students and guiding them to future success using language. Her advice to aspiring ESL educators is to make it fun, empathize with students and learn to read the students. Dr. Boyer thanks her undergraduate Spanish professor, Bob Kiekil, for his influence and teaching her these important lessons.

Looking ahead, Dr. Boyer plans to continue enjoying her retirement by getting involved in family genealogy research and volunteering at Golden West College. She is also involved with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Recently, she took classes with an online trading academy, which hopes to remain active with its privileges. To attest to her legacy, Dr. Boyer can also be found in the 25th and 26th editions of Who’s Who in the West. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, quilting, gardening, investing, bicycling, sailing and reading.
