Most recently, she flourished as a teacher of science and physical education for the San Marcos Unified School District until commencing her retirement in 2011. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Bernsen has been honored with several accolades, including a Women in Science Award and a C.A.R. Award. Under her tutelage, dozens of her students have graduated and studied medicine at the university level, which she considers to be her most notable achievement.

A graduate of San Diego State University, Ms. Bernsen earned a Bachelor of Arts in physical education with a minor in biological sciences in 1975. She concluded her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in education from the aforementioned institution in 1993. A member of the Thursday Club, Ms. Bernsen maintains a professional relationship with the Brady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. Reflecting on her illustrious career, she attributes her success to her uncle, who provided her with constant encouragement and inspiration.
