Jeffrey S. Borer, MD, Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, School of Public Health at University Hospital of Brooklyn, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiology.

At the early age of 16, Dr. Borer decided to become a doctor. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in government from Harvard College in 1965, proceeding to enroll in medical school at Cornell University. By 1969, he acquired a Doctor of Medicine, which provided him with a foundation off which to begin his career. After completing an internship with the General Hospital Corporation, he became a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard University. In the years that followed, Dr. Borer perfected his skills as the chief resident physician at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, going on to become the Senior Fulbright Hays Scholar in the cardiac department at Guy’s Hospital in London. Later, he excelled as the Glorney-Raisbeck Fellow in the Medical Sciences at the New York Academy of Medicine, which preceded his return to Guy’s Hospital as a visiting fellow from 1974 until 1975.

Following the conclusion of Dr. Borer’s academic efforts, he upheld numerous esteemed positions in medicine. Broaching the industry as a clinical associate for the cardiology board at the National Heart and Lung Institute, he became a consultant in cardiology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 1978. By 1982, he became an attending physician at New York-Presbyterian, where he remained until 2008. Alongside this role, Dr. Borer ventured into the education sector of his industry, excelling as a professor of cardiovascular medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine until 2008. In the subsequent months, he was hired as the chairman of the Howard Gilman Institute for Heart Valve Disease at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Borer continues to succeed at this institution today, though he is now a professor of public health within the School of Public Health. Moreover, he continues to master medical education as a professor in the department of academic orthopedic surgery at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.

As a respected member of his industry, Dr. Borer has worked with numerous professional publications throughout his career. A former co-editor for Handbooks in Health Care, he serves as a consulting editor to “Dialogues in Cardiovascular Medicine,” alongside his appointment as a section editor for “Valve Disease,” with the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Further, Dr. Borer has authored more than 500 combined peer-reviewed articles to professional journals and chapters to books across the last three decades. In light of his myriad accomplishments, he was awarded the Kanu Chatterjee Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to Cardiovascular Medicine in 2018. Earlier, in 2014, Dr. Borer was honored with the Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heart Valve Diseases from the International Heart Valve Society, along with many other awards in his collection. As a further testament to his success, Dr. Borer is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
