Sharon Michele Patterson-Tippins, PhD, Assistant Professor of Literacy and Dean of Arts and Sciences Division at Wilberforce University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
Inspired by her ancestors, Dr. Patterson-Tippins knew she wanted to become a teacher from a young age. She graduated from Alabama A&M University in 1976, which provided her with the foundation to become a teacher with the Pontiac School District. She excelled in this role for 34 years, relocating to Martin University for the subsequent three years. In 2008, Dr. Patterson-Tippins earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Oakland University. Later, in 2015, she became an assistant professor of literacy and dean of the arts and sciences division at Wilberforce University in Ohio. She remains in this role today, continuing to demonstrate consistent success with every student with whom she works.
In 2018, Dr. Patterson-Tippins earned the Educator of the Year Award from the National Parks Services. One year prior, her accomplishments were honored with the Faculty Enhancement Award from Onyx Night Performing Arts. Earlier, in 2002, she was named the Pontiac School District Teacher of the Year. A member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club Incorporated, Dr. Patterson-Tippins credits her success to hard work and determination to succeed. She would advise the next generation of educators to get plenty of sleep, as the beauty of a career in education is that much of it consists of trial and error. When Dr. Patterson-Tippins is not working, she enjoys playing the piano, reading and listening to classical music.
