Levert Hedgemon Jr., Retired Music Teacher at Tuscaloosa City Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
Inspired by the influence of passionate educators from his youth, Mr. Hedgemon desired to pursue the profession in order to impact students through music education. He went on to receive certification in elementary education and teaching from the University of Alabama, as well as certification in vocal and choral music for K-12 from the University of West Alabama. In 1979, Mr. Hedgemon commenced a renowned teaching tenure with the Tuscaloosa City Schools, where he taught middle school music education for grades six through eight. He remained with the district until his official retirement.
Despite his retirement, Mr. Hedgemon has served as a private choral music teacher for the past 22 years. Likewise, he has been a minister of music for the Weeping Mary Baptist Church since 2001. Mr. Hedgemon attributes his vast success to the fact that he was called to teaching. He is proud to say that his work has never felt like a job, as it is his passion and purpose in life.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, Mr. Hedgemon recalls his most notable achievement was providing the opportunity for his students to perform at the second inauguration of President Obama, as well as for the prime minister of the Bahamas. A strong believer that education does not just happen within the four walls of a classroom, he has always done his best to expose his students to the happenings of the outside world. In 1995, he attained a Bachelor of Arts in business administration and management from Stillman College. In five years’ time, Mr. Hedgemon plans to travel and spend more time with his wife, Catherine, and their family.
