Daniel J. Gifford, Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota,, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law education.

Interested in economics from a young age, Dr. Gifford matriculated in Holy Cross College, where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. Soon after receiving a Bachelor of Laws, cum laude, from Harvard University, in 1958, he went on to serve as an associate for Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York from 1958 to 1962. Dr. Gifford subsequently diverted his path to education and joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University in 1962 as an assistant professor of law. Promoted to associate professor in 1964, he departed from Vanderbilt and served the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1966, where he served as a full professor of law until 1977.

Dr. Gifford was employed by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1977 as a full professor of law, serving in that capacity for 12 years until being escalated to the rank of Robins, Kaplan, Millar, and Ceresi Professor of Law Chair. Also serving as a Julius David Chair at the university for one year, he retired and attained emeritus status in 2016. During his tenure at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Gifford attained a Doctor of Juridical Science from Columbia University in 1981.

Alongside his primary pursuits, Dr. Gifford was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an instructor at the Comparative Law Institute of Free University in Berlin, the University of Lyons in France, and the University of Uppsala in Sweden. Likewise, he served as a visiting fellow at the University of Warwick in England and was a visiting attorney at Bergson, Borkland, Margolis, and Adler in Washington, D.C., for one year.

Dr. Gifford has been admitted to the State Bars of New York and Minnesota, as well as before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second and Seventh Circuits, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. The author of “The Atlantic Divide in Antitrust” from 2015, he has also co-authored several casebooks and contributed articles to professional law journals. Additionally, he maintains affiliation with the American Law Institute, the American Bar Association, and the Minnesota Bar Association.
