Irene Estrella, Retired School Teacher, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
The youngest of nine children, Ms. Estrella was raised in Fairfield, California to two farmworkers. She had always enjoyed learning and reading was her favorite activity, which eventually led her to further her education at the collegiate level. The second person in her family to graduate high school, Ms. Estrella went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in anthropology and psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. From her years taking dance lessons, she enjoyed helping the instructor show young girls how to do steps correctly, which was her first taste in teaching. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Estrella achieved a Master’s degree in special education for the highly gifted from California State University, Fullerton, as she wanted to help children who had difficulty learning in the regular educational system.
In 1975, Ms. Estrella joined the Montebello Unified School District in Montebello, California, where she notably served as a kindergarten through third grade teacher for 35 illustrious years. Retiring from her full-time role in 2010, she remained active with the school district as a volunteer and substitute teacher until 2013. Additionally, she began tutoring her grandchildren in 2020 during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic when schools shifted to remote learning. Looking back, Ms. Estrella attributes her career success to her strong mentality and goal-oriented nature. She stresses that regardless of where you come from, you always have the ability to accomplish your goals and become whatever you want to become. Ms. Estrella recalls her career highlight has been helping children who need a bit more attention in the classroom, as their education is just as important as the students who are able to keep up independently.
