Walter Merrill Cummins, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in writing and education.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1957, Dr. Cummins spent the next two years as a sales and advertising trainee at General Electric, quickly realizing that his interests lay in writing and literature and that he had no desire to remain in the corporate world. Dr. Cummins began his service in the United States Army National Guard in 1959, and enrolled in the world-renowned University of Iowa writer’s workshop shortly after. He graduated in 1962 with a Master of Arts, a Master of Fine Arts, and a desire to teach others.
Dr. Cummins remained at the University of Iowa, where he began doctoral coursework and teaching as an adjunct instructor. He was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in 1965, and accepted an assistant professor position at Fairleigh Dickinson University, rising to full professor and continuing to teach until 2002, when he was granted professor emeritus status. Dr. Cummins was instrumental in developing Fairleigh Dickinson’s interdisciplinary and distance education programs, and his teaching philosophy centers the reciprocal nature of communication in education.
In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Cummins spent much of his career as an independent communications consultant, and currently co-publishes Serving House Books. He has contributed numerous essays and short stories to journals, and and is the author of more than a dozen novels and collections of short stories and essays, including “Witness,” 1975, “Habitat: Stories of Bent Realism,” 2013, and the upcoming “Maladjusted: Revisiting My Past,” expected in late 2020. He remains active in the College English Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the American Association of University Professors, where he is a past chapter president. Dr. Cummins has previously been selected for inclusion in the 63rd Edition of Who’s Who in America, two volumes of Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in the East.
