Francis K. Nuwah, MD, MHA, CSA, RMA, CHEP, Program Lead and Chair of the Department of Health Sciences at Stratford University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in global health.
Growing up in Sierra Leone, the young Dr. Nuwah was distraught by the sudden death of a pregnant woman due to miscarriage, along with the inability for her to receive a cesarean section and placenta removal. His grandmother told him that if he pursued studies to become a doctor that he could save lives, which is exactly what he did. He achieved a Doctor of Medicine from Crimea Medical State University in Ukraine in 1994 and completed a surgical residency at Connaught Hospital in Sierra Leone by 1997. Additionally, in 2015, he received a Master of Science, magna cum laude, in healthcare administration from Stratford University in Virginia. Since 2007, Dr. Nuwah has served as program lead and chair of the department of health services at Stratford University, as well as a surgical technician of the OB/GYN unit at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. since 1999.
Earlier in his career, between 1995 and 1999, Dr. Nuwah worked for Kenema Government Hospital, Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, and the International Federation of the Red Cross. Upon his arrival to the U.S., he was an assistant OB/GYN surgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital from 1999 to 2006 and an assistant research coordinator at the Washington Hospital Center in 2004 and 2005. Between 2008 and 2012, he took on teaching positions at Northern Virginia Community College and the University of the District of Columbia Hospital. In addition, he was a surgical technician/assistant at Inova Loudoun Hospital and Sentara Hospital between 2017 and 2020. Finding great success throughout his career, Dr. Nuwah received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Virginia Career Colleges Association in 2009 and 2012. In addition, Career Education College and Universities honored him for Excellence in Teaching in 2018 and Excellence in Online Teaching in 2020. In 2006, he was co-author of “Surrogates Decision Maker and End of Life Decisions” at the San Francisco International Conference. Presently, Dr. Nuwah maintains affiliation with the International Federation of the Red Cross, the American Surgical Association, and the American Surgical Assistant Association.
