Eileen Gentilcore, Principal and Compliance Officer at Syosset School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academic administration.
Dr. Gentilcore had aspirations to become a teacher since she was in the third grade. Her father suggested she become a court stenographer, but she did not like the idea of sitting for so long. Her brother attended the University of Notre Dame and her father offered to get another job to help pay for her way through college. With her father’s great support, she signed up to attend the State University of New York, Potsdam where she received a Bachelor of Science in education. Shen then matriculated at Hofstra University, where she earned a Master in Education in 1968, a Professional Diploma in 1976 and a Doctor of Education in 1979. Dr. Gentilcore commenced her career in 1951 as a first-grade teacher at Sea Cliff School, remaining until 1952. The following year, she founded the Germany Officers Preschool in Munich, Germany. From 1953 to 1954, she was a first-grade teacher at Peekskill School and joined Syosset School in 1954.
Notably, Dr. Gentilcore remained at Syosset School for 57 years until 2011, in which she held the roles of second-grade teacher, reading consultant, headteacher and principal. In 2012, she was a guest lecturer at Adelphi University. As a testament to her success, Dr. Gentilcore has received myriad awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Syosset-Woodbury Rotary International since 2004. She also received an Angel Award from Gift of Life, Inc. in 2014 and 2019, a District Service Award from the Syosset-Woodbury Rotary International in 2007 and a Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction Award from 2003 to 2004. Additionally, the Syosset-Woodbury Rotary International named her to Women of Distinction in 2005. To attest to her legacy, Dr. Gentilcore has also been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in America.
