Gene Collins Jr., Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Portsmouth High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership.

Growing up with a love of sports, Mr. Collins earned a Bachelor of Science in social science from Shawnee State University in 1994. He began his career as an administrative assistant with the Department of Youth Services, where he remained for 16 years. It was not until 1990 that he began working with college athletes as an assistant head coach at his alma mater, Shawnee State University. During his time there, he was promoted to an associate head coach, though he relocated in 2008. Since then, Mr. Collins has excelled as the head boys varsity basketball coach at Portsmouth High School in Ohio.

Outside of his primary ventures, Mr. Collins volunteers with his local community center and local juvenile justice court systems. He maintains affiliation with the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Reflecting on his professional success, Mr. Collins credits the many wonderful students with whom he has worked. Looking toward the future, he hopes to create a Boys and Girls Club of America location in Ohio. He is currently working on generating the funds necessary to do so with a team of dedicated individuals. As a testament to his success, Mr. Collins earned the Home Team Award from Shawnee State University in 2010.
