John W. Percy, Retired Secondary School and College Educator at Canisius College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the history.
Mr. Percy became involved in his profession after serving in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. They pulled him out of electronics school and put him in instructor’s school. He enjoyed it, so he decided to follow it as a career. In addition, what attracted him to education was his father who had been a teacher and later became a mathematician, but his in-laws were more inspirational in getting him into the educational field. Mr. Percy earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1955. He then received a Master of Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1965. Continuing with his education, he took postgraduate coursework at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1966 to 1977 and at Niagara University from 1971 to 1977.
Mr. Percy’s career highlight is his entire career with all the awards and certifications he has received. He began his career as a floor manager with W.T. Grant Co. in 1955, remaining until 1958. He then became a teacher with Tonawanda Public Schools in 1959 and remained in that position until he retired in 1991. During that time, he also was a negotiator for Tonawanda Education Association from 1984 to 1985 and vice president of Tonawanda School Employees Federal Credit Union from 1983 to 1985. In 1991, he became an adjunct associate professor of history at Canisius College, where he stayed until 2002. As a testament to his success, Mr. Percy received an Augsperger Local History Award from the Buffalo Erie County Historical Society in 1982, Augspurger Medal in 1982, County Certified Award in 1980, and an Honor Award from Tonawanda Education Association in 1968. He is also listed in the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the East.
