Harry M. Statham, Former Basketball Coach and Associate Professor at McKendree University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
In 1960, Mr. Statham earned a Bachelor of Science from McKendree College, which provided him with a foundation on which to attend the University of Illinois. One year later, he acquired a Master’s in physical education. Beginning his career as a coach for his local junior high’s sports team, Mr. Statham was hired as the athletic director and head of men’s basketball at McKendree University in 1966. He remained there until he retired in 2018, inspiring each athlete with whom he worked to perform to the best of their ability at every game.
An active member of his industry, Mr. Statham maintains affiliation with numerous professional organizations. These include the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Illinois High School Association, and the Illinois Hall of Fame Association. In 2019, as a reflection of his myriad accomplishments, he was awarded the NABC Golden Anniversary Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This award is just one of many in Mr. Statham’s possession. Some of his earlier honors include the Guardians of the Game Honor Award for 1100 Wins, being named as the AMC Athlete Director of the Year, and being inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. Reflecting on his success, Mr. Statham credits his work ethic and depth of focus, as well as the quality of the players on his team. In the coming years, Mr. Statham would like to continue working with the organization of Small College Basketball.
