Richard Davis Hagni, Curits Professor of Geology Emeritus at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geology.
In his formative years, Dr. Hagni was intrigued by how geology was an applied science, meaning it had an impact on industry. He went on to pursue the field at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1953 and a Master of Science in geology in 1954. After serving with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, he commenced his professional career and achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in geology from the University of Missouri in 1962. A certified professional geologist, Dr. Hagni has served the Missouri University of Science and Technology in numerous capacities since 1956. Initially joining the Department of Geology and Geophysics as an instructor, he was promoted to assistant professor in 1960, associate professor in 1966, professor in 1977, Gulf Oil Foundation professor in 1984 and Cirator’s professor in 1993. Additionally, he served as department chair from 1985 to 2000, also attaining emeritus status in 2000.
The recipient of 41 research grants, Dr. Hagni was named a scholar by Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst at Universitat Heidelberg in Germany in 1983. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Best Paper Award from the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists in 1985, as he is renowned for his written works and contributions to more than 200 articles to professional journals. A fellow of the Geological Association of America and Society of Economic Geologists, Dr. Hagni also holds membership with the American Association Professional Geologists, International Association on Genesis Ore Deposits, International Council on Applied Mineralogy, International Mineralogical Association, Association of Missouri Geologists, Missouri Academy of Science and Sigma Xi. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Hagni is also listed in various editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
