May E. Stack, Retired Library Director, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science.
Growing up an avid reader, Ms. Stack’s high school librarian, Ms. Mae Brown, took note of her interests and taught her the ins and outs of the library. During her high school years, she worked for the Crystal Springs Consolidated High School in Mississippi under the supervision of Ms. Brown and learned how to mend books, shelve and file. Ms. Stack went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from the Mississippi State College for Women, now known as Mississippi University for Women, in 1962, a Master of Business Administration from Western New England University in 1981 and a Master of Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University in 1989.
Ms. Stack spent the entirety of her 40-year professional career with Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts, most recently as director of the undergraduate program from 1991 until her retirement in 2005. Prior to her distinguished role, she served as assistant director from 1984 to 1989, cataloger from 1972 to 1984, acquisitions staff from 1966 to 1972, and clerk from 1965 to 1966. In addition to this tenure, she excelled as the chair of the Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing collection development committee from 1993 to 1995, for which she later held a post on the executive board from 1993 to 1996. Despite her retirement, Ms. Stack remains affiliated with the American Library Association, Massachusetts Library Association, Association of College & Research Libraries, Library Leadership and Management Association, and Library and Information Technology Association. To attest to her legacy, Ms. Stack is also listed in the 49th through 62nd editions of Who’s Who in America, the 29th through 38th editions of Who’s Who in the East, the 19th through 28th editions of Who’s Who of American Women and the 13th edition of Who’s Who in the World.
