Thelma Truedell Bryant, EdD, Retired Educator at Savannah Chatham Board of Public Education, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

Dr. Bryant became involved in her profession because she wanted to become an astronaut and she figured that would be the way to do it. She studied mathematics although not many women were doing that back then and she got a job as an actuarial student at a company in New York. She went back to her hometown, continued teaching, and stayed there for forty years. Dr. Bryant earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Tuskegee Institute in 1969. She then received a Master of Arts from Cambridge College in 1996. Continuing with her education, she received a Doctor of Education in educational leadership and change from the Fielding Institute in 1999.

Dr. Bryant plays the organ and the piano at various churches. All of her life music has run second to mathematics because she was not sure what she wanted to do, but she would not give either up. She learned to play every instrument because her mother had five children and did not have money for an instrument so they played the school instruments. There was a parade that Dr. Bryant wanted to be a part of but another person got the instrument that she wanted. From that experience, she vowed to not miss another parade again. This led her to learn all of the instruments. When she was through, Dr. Bryant was guaranteed that she would not miss another parade. In high school, she went to the governor’s honors program with music, so it all paid off. She continues to play to this day in a band at her church. It is made up mostly of older people with some young people as well and they perform for the holidays. Dr. Bryant was an educator with the Savannah Chatham Board of Public Education for 39 years until her retirement. She has been inducted as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
