Prudence Malava Peya, Retired Elementary School Educator at Center Area School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
Ms. Peya always knew she was going to be a teacher from the early age of seven years old. She began practicing her craft in her childhood bedroom, always playing teacher with whoever she could find. Later, when it came time to pursue a formal education, Ms. Peya immediately knew what she would study. She matriculated at Duquesne University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1965, a Master of Education in special education in 1967, and a Master of Science in elementary education and supervision and administration and supervision in 1977.
Ms. Peya had a wonderful experience working with her myriad gifted students. Some were creative but extremely disorganized. Many of them had an IQ of 130 and above but were considered right-brained and needed help expressing their creativity. Ms. Peya began her career as a permanent substitute teacher for the Montour Area School District in 1965. From there, she joined the Center Area School District in 1965, remaining until her retirement in 1999. While there, she served as an elementary teacher, a gifted support teacher, a coordinator of the gifted program, and a coordinator of special education. As a testament to her success, Ms. Peya received a State Award and was named Elementary Gifted Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education in 1984. She is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in America.
