Andrew Hugine, President at Alabama A&M University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academic leadership.
Notably serving as the 11th president of Alabama A&M University since 2009, Dr. Hugine feels honored to be in a position to influence the lives of students and to salute his family of educators. Having first served as president to South Carolina State University from 2004 to 2009, he gained initial experience at the university as director of institutional self-studies, vice president of academic affairs, and professor of mathematics. Dr. Hugine takes great pride in being president of two 1890 land grant universities and he attributes his motivation to his parents, elementary and high school teachers, and college professors. Prior to obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in education administration from Michigan State University in 1977, he attended South Carolina University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1971 and a Master of Arts in mathematics in 1975.
Renowned for his success in his role, Dr. Hugine was named Male President of the Year by the Historically Black College and Universities Digest in 2019. In 2012, Essence Magazine granted him the Southern Company Educator Award and the University of South Carolina named the Andrew Hugine Jr. Living Learning Complex Building after him in his honor. A member of the Alabama Council of Presidents, Alabama School of Cyber Security and Technology, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Dr. Hugine also sits on the board of directors for the Alabama School of Science and Madison United Way. The academic executive is also chair of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and honorary chair of the Centennial Observance of the Omega Phi Phi Fraternity’s Salute to Education Celebration. Looking ahead, he plans to retire in the coming years and dedicated more time to volunteer work. He works and lives by his motto, “Do onto others as you would want to do onto you.”
