Backed by a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Union University, Dr. Winfree went on to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Howard University College of Dentistry in 1978. He proceeded to complete advanced training in periodontics, fixed prosthodontics and oral surgery. After graduating from the ADEA Institute for Teaching and Learning, Dr. Winfree completed a fellowship at the ADEA Leadership Institute. He then proceeded to commence his career at a private practice from 1982 until 1999. That year, he became a member of the Department of Restorative Services at the Howard University College of Dentistry. He remains there today as an associate professor, though he has upheld several other roles throughout his career trajectory. From 2012 until 2014, he was the dental director for Bel Alton Regional Dental Center and a member on the board of directors for the Bel Alton Alumni Association Community Development Corporation.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Winfree acted as the chairman of the admission committee within the Institute for Entrepreneurship. Additionally, he has also found success as a prolific author. Some of his most notable works include, “Addressing the Shortage of Dentists in Underserved Areas” and “Oral Candidiasis Infections with Limited Clinical Findings,” both of which were published in Dentistry Today. Further, he maintains affiliation with the United States Army, as he participated as a commissioned officer from 1979 until 1982 and then on the active reserves from 1982 until 1993.
Looking back on his accomplishments, Dr. Winfree attributes much of his success to his natural inclination toward working with others. A self-proclaimed “people person,” he has been abundantly awarded throughout his career. In 2000, he earned the Community Outreach Award from the Howard University College of Dentistry, which was followed up by the 2003 Academic Excellence Award in Health Services from Southeastern University. More recently, in 2013, Dr. Winfree was presented with the Governor’s Citation from the State of Maryland for Support and Contributions to the Bel Alton Community Center. In the coming years, Dr. Winfree hopes to enter retirement and take on some part-time teaching positions.
