Gerald Lawson Gill, Professor at James Madison University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science.

As a freshman at the University of Georgia, Mr. Gill took a test at the career counseling center and ranked high in the fields of journalism and mathematics, but found he was most qualified to become a librarian. In 1971, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history, philosophy, and religion. By 1973, he had earned a Master’s in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the following years, he furthered his education with postgraduate coursework in business administration at James Madison University.

A certified professional librarian in the state of Virginia, Mr. Gill began his career by working in the reference library at James Madison University. He was unaware of it at the time, but he would go on to flourish at the university, taking on roles of more responsibility as he gained the necessary experience. From 1987 until 1999, Mr. Gill worked in the Business Reference Library, going on to bring his skills to the Government Documents Library until 2003. He proceeded to take on the title of the head of reference and government documents alongside his concurrent position as a professor. In 2010, he earned the title of professor emeritus in recognition of his success in the classroom and library. Outside of his primary roles, he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and is an active lecturer and speaker to both national and regional groups.

An active member of his industry, Mr. Gill maintains affiliation with a number of organizations. He has previously acted as the parliamentarian for the Virginia Library Association, the treasurer for the Special Librarians Association, and the chairman of the Academy Libraries Committee. In light of his myriad accomplishments, he has earned the Gale Research Award and the Business Librarianship Excellence Award, both from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Outside of his professional ventures, Mr. Gill enjoys collecting art and writing.
