Miriam Feely Shelden, PhD, Physical Education Educator and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
Coming from a family of teachers, Dr. Sheldon always knew she wanted to pursue a career in education. Once it came time for her to attend college, she enrolled at the University of Iowa, where she graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in physical education. She then attended the University of Oregon, earning a Master’s in physical education. In 1974, she furthered her education once more and acquired a PhD in the history of physical education from the University of Southern California. After gaining experience at the Lakeview Public Schools and Northwest Missouri State College, Dr. Sheldon began working as a junior supervisor at the University of California Berkeley. In 1971, after serving as an instructor at the University of Southern California, she became an assistant professor of physical education at Central Michigan University. From 1975 until 2000, she served as a professor of physical education at the University of South Carolina, going on to earn the title of distinguished professor emeritus in 2000. She continues to hold that title today.
Throughout her career, Dr. Sheldon has seen many of her former students establish themselves as a professional and grow exponentially in their desire field. She considers the most rewarding part of her work to be the ability to follow their careers and witness excellence that she helped to cultivate. As an active member of her field, she maintains affiliation with several professional organizations. These include the South Carolina Association of Health, the North American Society of Sport History, and the American Association of University Professors, among others.
Outside of her primary endeavors, Dr. Sheldon enjoys skiing, hiking, theater, and opera. She additionally acted as the chairperson of the American Red Cross safety committee in Spartanburg from 1983 until 1986, and then again from 1993 until 1995. As a testament to her success, Dr. Shelden is featured in the 3rd edition of Who’s Who in American Education and the 16th edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
