George Waring, Zoologist at Southern Illinois University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in zoology and animal behavior (ethology).
With more than 50 years of professional experience in the field of zoology, Dr. Waring has excelled as a professor on behalf of Southern Illinois University. At the start of his career in 1966, he served the role of an assistant professor, before advancing to the position of associate professor in 1974 and full professor ten years later. Additionally, Dr. Waring served as major professor for more than 60 graduate students in animal behavior and vertebrate zoology. During 1972 and 1973, he contributed as a visiting professor at the University of Munich in Germany.
A graduate of Colorado State University, Dr. Waring received a Bachelor of Science in 1962, a Master of Arts degree at the University of Colorado in 1964, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1966 at Colorado State University. While pursuing his degrees, he also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1957 to 1965. Dr. Waring’s areas of scientific interest have included the behavioral traits of wild, captive, and domesticated animals. Earning distinction as a scientist, Dr. Waring was selected in 1972 to serve for a year as Research Program Director for the newly established U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, and he continued to serve for many years thereafter as a part-time consultant.
Among his many accomplishments in the field, Dr. Waring received a National Institutes of Health fellowship between 1965 and 1966. He was also presented with the E.C. Jean Research Award from the Colorado-Wyoming Academy of Science in 1965, the Exceptional Service Award from the Animal Behavior Society in 1996 as well as Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004. An exceptional Marquis listee, Dr. Waring has been featured in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
