Frances LaVonne White, PhD, Academic Administrator at Skyline College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academic administration.
Dr. White was inspired to pursue a career in education by her family, who was comprised of various educators of different backgrounds. Aspiring to journey down the same path, she attended Merritt College, where she earned an Associate of Arts in education in 1968. Two years later in 1970, she received a Bachelor of Science in psychology from California State University, Hayward, from whom she subsequently obtained a Master of Science in counseling and psychology in 1972. After several years, she returned to higher education and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in education administration from the University of California Berkeley in 1990.
At the inception of her career in 1980, Dr. White was an instructor of psychology at Peralta Colleges in Oakland, California, for one decade, when she was promoted to director of staff development until 1991. Moving on to Laney College, she became the dean of social sciences, arts and physical education until 1994. Subsequently, she served in the same capacity at Evergreen Valley College for two years and was an interim chancellor at the college in 1996. From 1996 to 1999, she excelled as the executive vice-chancellor of the City College of San Francisco. As such, drawing upon her prior experience in administration, Dr. White has been the president of Skyline College since 1999 while simultaneously serving the College of Marin as superintendent and president from 2004 to 2010.
Civically involved, Dr. White has maintained membership with the community advisory board of the Seton Medical Center and as chair of the board of directors of Families on Track, both since 1999. Formerly, she was president of the board of directors of the Administrators California Chambers of Commerce Association, a member of the Oakland Citizen’s Advisory Boar, and board member of the Community College League of California. Recently, she served as president of the Rotary Club of San Rafael from 2017 to 2018 and was president of the board of the Marin Symphony for four years.
In recognition of her achievements in educational administration, Dr. White was inducted into the Marin County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2019, having previously been recognized as Educator of the Year by Iota Phi Lambda in 2001. She also earned the ACCCA Harry J. Buttimer Award for Distinguished Administration from the Association of California Community College Administrators in 2010 and the Tom Lakin Leadership Award from the California Chamber Of Commerce’s African American Trustees in 1997. Married with one child and three grandchildren, Dr. White enjoys reading, bicycling, singing, walking and meditating in her spare time. In five years’ time, she intends to begin consulting while working on institutional and strategic planning.
