Shelly A. McGrath, Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in criminal justice education.

Backed by more than 15 years of professional experience in criminal justice education, Dr. McGrath has excelled as an assistant professor within the department of justice sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 2009. Gaining one year of experience at the university as an instructor, Dr. McGrath had spent 2004 to 2008 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in various roles. Of her positions, she had notably served as a teaching and research assistant of sociology, vice president for graduate school affairs and, most recently, was an administrative assistant for the graduate and professional student council. Dr. McGrath, however, commenced her professional career with Ball State University in 2002 as a teaching and research assistant within the department of sociology, where she remained for two years. In 2001, Dr. McGrath received a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and communications from St. Mary’s College and went on to attend Ball State University. There, she earned a Master of Arts in sociology in 2003 and a Master of Arts in political science in 2004. Continuing her education, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in criminal justice from Southern Illinois University in 2009.

Dr. McGrath had always loved learning and being a student, and she now enjoys her academic hours as a professor in which she can educate today’s blossoming minds while also conducting her own research. Her main research interests include fear and perceived risk of victimization, domestic violence, victim advocacy and violent crime. She is also interested in crime mapping and innovative uses of that computer software, and in 2017 was awarded a Project Safe Neighborhood Grant. To remain involved with her field on a collaborative level, Dr. McGrath holds membership with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Mid-South Sociological Association and Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. Additionally, she sits on the board of directors for the Birmingham City Football Club. Dr. McGrath attributes the success of her career to dedication to pushing herself and setting high expectations.
