A respected voice in his Virginia community, Mr. Jones has accrued more than 50 years of inimitable experience in the fields of education, government and law. With a background in trial work and business law as well as wills, trusts and corporations, Mr. Jones is now retired from law practice. However, he remains involved in the day-to-day business of Jones, Walker & Lake, Virginia Professional Corporation, as he has served as chairman of the firm for 24 years, from 1991 to 2015. In addition to his legal career, Mr. Jones is a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and a former member of the Board of Governors for senior attorneys of the Virginia State Bar.
From 1986 to 1988, Mr. Jones notably served as the mayor of the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, in which he gained governmental experience as a city councilman from 1982 to 1988. Prior to this distinguished appointment, he was an educator of many years throughout the states of Virginia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Mr. Jones commenced his teaching career in 1964 at Davidson College in which he served as an assistant professor for one year. Moving on, he joined the faculty of Lehigh University as an associate professor from 1965 to 1971. At the same time, Mr. Jones was a professor at the University of Virginia from 1965 to 1974.
Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Mr. Jones had taken on numerous roles in reputable organizations. He was chairman of the Virginia Beach Economic Development Authority from 2003 to 2005 and an advisor and board member of the Princess Anne Bank from 1997 to 2005. In the 1980s, he was part of the Tidewater Transportation District Commission as vice chairman from 1987 to 1988 and chairman from 1988 to 1989, and is also a past chairman of the Virginia Beach Historic Homes Foundation. In these distinguishable roles, Mr. Jones drew upon the lessons and influence he gained from George L. Albanafy, his former law professor, and James E. Dettes.
Mr. Jones received a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College in 1958 and a Master of Divinity from Yale University in 1961. Continuing his education, he achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from Duke University in 1966 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Virginia Law School in 1974. Upon acquiring his legal degree, Mr. Jones was admitted to practice law in the State of Virginia in 1974 and with the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977. As a testament to his legacy, Mr. Jones has also been featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who In Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in the World.
