Patricia Ann Sherman, PhD, Educator, Coach and MSHSL Volleyball Official at Winona Park Recreation Board, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physical education.

Having a deep connection with sports since her years in junior high school, Dr. Sherman was certain she wanted to pursue a career in physical education and coaching. In 1964, she graduated from Winona State University with a Bachelor of Science in physical education, and went on to obtain a Master of Arts in physical education in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical education in 1972, both from the University of Iowa. Having accrued more than 60 years of inimitable experience in her field, Dr. Sherman retired in 2017 after serving as a tennis professional, racket stringer and dealer from 1991 to 2015. Since 1993, she has been a girl’s and boy’s tennis coach at St. Stans Middle School, as well as the tennis director, supervisor and instructor at the Winona Park Recreation Board since 1982.

Dr. Sherman commenced her career as a teacher in 1957, and in 1964 she became an instructor at North High School in Wisconsin. In 1966, she joined the faculty at the University of Iowa as a graduate teaching assistant, moving up to instructor and coach positions. Between 1972 and 1981, Dr. Sherman was an assistant professor of physical education and coach at Gustavus Adolphus College, the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and Winona State University. Progressing in her career, she was the girl’s assistant tennis coach at Winona Senior High School in 1989, the tennis director and instructor at the Winona YMCA from 1989 to 1991 and a girl’s tennis coach at Winona Middle School and boy’s head tennis coach at Cotter High School from 1990 to 1993. Looking back on her career, Dr. Sherman is most proud of her ability to relate and help the students that she worked with, and gives thanks to her mentor, Millie Brown, for teaching her this important skill. In 1989, she was inducted into the Winona State University Athletic Hall of Fame and was also proud to receive a Josephine Flagg scholarship and Purple Key from Kappa Delta Pi. As a testament to her achievements, Dr. Sherman is also listed in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Education.
