Manfred Philipp, PhD, Biochemist and Educator at Lehman College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia and biochemistry.

Interested in chemistry and biochemistry early on, Dr. Philipp was determined to improve the quality of other individuals’ lives, particularly through the study of cardiovascular disease. Working on enzyme inhibitors of the blood clotting system, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, cum laude, from Michigan Technological University in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from Northwestern University in 1971. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Freiburg in Germany for the following four years, as well as an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health for two years.

Now named a professor emeritus, Dr. Philipp served Lehman College as a professor within the Department of Chemistry for more than 25 years until his retirement in 2016. Previously, he served the CUNY Graduate Center as a professor of biochemistry and chemistry for the doctoral program, the University of Munich’s Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry as a visiting scientist, the University of Ulm as a visiting professor in their polymer section, and the Weizmann Institute of Science as a visiting scientist in the Department of Biochemistry.

Dr. Philipp has authored non refereed articles to several professional journals, and has contributed symposium volumes, policy reports, textbook chapters, presentations, blog posts and citations throughout the course of his career. As a testament to his wide success, he earned the 2020 Governor Norbert T. Tiemann Award from Beta Sigma Psi, the 2006 and 2012 Fulbright Scholar Award, the 2010 Resolution of Appreciation Award from the University Faculty Senate of CUNY, and the 1997 Lehman College Prism Award for Promotion of Diversity, among myriad other accolades and grants.
