John W. Fisher, PhD, PE, NAE, Civil Engineering Educator Emeritus at Lehigh University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in civil engineering and academia.
Supported by a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, both from Lehigh University, Dr. Fisher currently holds the title of professor emeritus at Lehigh University after serving as a professor of civil engineering for 42 years. Named a Joseph T. Stuart professor between 1988 and 2002, he was also the co-director from 1999 to 2001, director of advanced technology large structural systems in the Engineering Research Center from 1986 to 1999, co-chair of civil engineering from 1984 to 1985 and associate director of the Fritz Engineering Laboratory from 1971 to 1985. He commenced his tenure at Lehigh in 1961 as a research instructor. At the inception of his career in 1958, he served as an assistant bridge research engineer for the National Academy of Sciences for three years.
A registered professional engineer in the State of Illinois, Dr. Fisher has authored numerous textbooks and contributed more than 300 articles to professional journals. He has maintained affiliation as a distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Institute of Steel Construction, the American Welding Society, the Transportation Research Board and the American Society of Engineering Educators.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Fisher was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1986 and received the T.Y. Lin Medal from the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety in 2008. Previously, the American Society of Civil Engineers bestowed upon him the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education in 2007 and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering gave him the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering in 2001, among other accolades.
