Title: Third Grade Teacher
Company: DREAM Charter School
Location: New York, New York, United States
Chamari Davis, Third Grade Teacher at DREAM Charter School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
Ms. Davis knew at three years old that she wanted to be a teacher. She had an older sister who was already in pre-k at the time, and her mom was an assistant teacher in the classroom. Being in the classroom and watching students learn was something that interested and moved her. Through her own experience as a child, she had always felt connected to her teachers on a personal level, and she loved the way they challenged her while also comforting her and creating the safe spaces necessary for her to grow. It was not until she reached middle school that Ms. Davis was truly motivated to work in low-income areas. As a student that was raised in a low-income area, she became passionate about the work when noticing the gap between the schools that were in her neighborhood and the schools in other neighborhoods. She was lucky enough to attend a magnet school, while her sister stayed in the public school system, and it became clear to see the differences and the opportunities they were given. This is what drove Ms. Davis to work in the demographic that she now does. Notably, Ms. Davis earned a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and teaching, as well as sociology from Eastern Connecticut State University in 2014. From there, she received a Master of Arts in international educational development from Teachers College at Columbia University in 2019.
Ms. Davis is currently interested in becoming a children’s author, as she has started developing and drafting a children’s book. She hopes to find success in this path as an author because over her years of education she feels that the thing she really appreciates and honors in her classroom over anything is reading books. Ms. Davis started her career as a teacher for Teach for America in 2014, remaining until 2016. Since 2016, she has been an elementary school teacher at Dream Charter School. In her spare time, she is active with Leadership of Educational Equity. As a testament to her success, Ms. Davis has recently been nominated for the Teacher Apple Award of New York.
