Katherine Nashleanas, PhD, Faculty at University of Nebraska, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geography.

Dr. Nashleanas became involved in her profession because she knew that she wanted to teach when she was in kindergarten. She is the first person in her family to go and successfully graduate from college. She wanted to educate with every fiber of her being since she was a child and ended up majoring in history. She took a course in social science and then a summer course in geography, from which she felt like she had just taken a trip around the world.

Upon earning a bachelor’s degree and teacher certification, Dr. Nashleanas could not find a job in America, so she moved to Norway to teach for two years. She earned a Bachelor of Science in geography from California State University, Long Beach, followed by a Master of Science in international intercultural communication from Pepperdine University and earned a Master of Science from California State University, East Bay. In 2005, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in geography from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. Nashleanas’ passion for teaching, for students and geography stem from her love of humanity. In 1992, she joined the University of Nebraska as a professor of geography and holds that position to this day. She is also the author of articles including, “Metageographic Communities: A Geographic Model of Demassified Societies,” “Human Geography Reader” and “Approaches to Reading the Cultural Landscape of Nebraska: Historical Markers, Literature and Living History Reenactments.”

As a testament to her success, Dr. Nashleanas has received a Teacher Award in high education in 2017, an Excellence in Geography from the Eta Phi Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon in 1991 and a Buzzard Graduate Scholarship in 1991. She has also been inducted as a member of the American Association of Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education and Canadian Association of Geographers, among others.
