L. Jean Sheldon, PhD, Professor of Old Testament at Pacific Union College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in theological studies.
Despite hailing from a family of educators, Dr. Sheldon believes her passion for theology was something that was innate. She received a BA in religion from Anderson University in 1982, a MA in biblical studies from Loma Linda University in 1984, and went on to achieve a PhD in ancient near Eastern religions from the University of California Berkeley and Graduate Theological Union in 2002. Dr. Sheldon says it was in college that God called upon her to be a theologian. Since 2005, Dr. Sheldon has served as a professor of Old Testament at Pacific Union College, as well as an ordained minister with Seventh Day Adventist Church. She previously worked at the college as a professor of religion from 1995 to 2005 and a graduate analyst from 1988 to 1999. Dr. Sheldon commenced her career, however, as a religion instructor at Hong Kong Adventist College in China between 1984 and 1987.
Throughout her career, Dr. Sheldon has authored a number of religious works, including “Servant God The Cosmic Conflict of God’s Trustworthiness,” “No Longer Naked and Ashamed: Discovering That God Is Not an Abuser,” “Chasing Heaven to Avoid Hell: Is Christianity Just Fire Insurance?” “And God Cried Out: Why This Suffering?” “Images and Power and a Kingdom of Priests,” Andrews University Seminary Studies 52 (2014): 161-172 and “Sharing Jesus.” Looking ahead, Dr. Sheldon plans to utilize her unique interpretation of the Bible in her attempts to grow in that interpretation and find better ways of seeing the Bible so that people can find the problems they struggle with solving. She attributes her success to God, as well as her healthy and stabilizing understanding of Him that allows her to grow and develop without tight restrictions.
