Eugene A. Kaplan, Professor and Chair Emeritus at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychiatry.

Inspired by the extraordinarily charismatic and intelligent, Dr. Edward Stainbrook, a professor of psychiatry, Dr. Kaplan wished to follow the same path as the brilliant man he came across in college. Today, Dr. Kaplan is a notable professor and chair emeritus of the psychiatry department at the SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse since 1999. He commenced his years with the institution in 1961, serving in numerous roles such as instructor to professor of the course of his nearly 60-year tenure. For his unmatched success in his positions, Dr. Kaplan is the recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Medicine’s Clinical Department and was honored for 50 years of service at Employee Recognition Day.

Dr. Kaplan received a BA, magna cum laude, from Syracuse University in 1954, and went on to achieve his MD at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse College of Medicine in 1957. He served as a medical intern at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1957 and 1958 and completed a residency in psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1961. From Dr. Kaplan’s years of study and professional growth, his research interests developed into a focus on psychotherapies, depression and suicide and human sexual problems, and clinical interests include psychodynamic and existential individual therapies, anxiety, and depressive syndromes and human sexual problems. Dr. Kaplan is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is also a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Phi Kappa Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to his dedicated career of teaching and psychiatry, he served as a commander with the U.S. Medical Corps and U.S. Navy from 1967b to 1969. To attest to his vast career accomplishments, Dr. Kaplan can also be found in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
