Andrew Alan Beveridge, Sociologist at Queens College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in United States demography, Civil Rights and urban development.
Dr. Beveridge joined the faculty at Queens College in 1981 as an associate professor and later gained full professorship in sociology at the institution. In his academic ventures, he has explored the business intersection of interests for demographics, legal aspects, and social activism. This has paved the way for SocialExplorer, Inc., an enterprise he co-founded with Ahmed Lacevic that is a data visualization project funded by the National Science Foundation and The New York Times with the goal of developing a simple online interface that opens up access to demographic data using visual mapping tools. Launched in 2007, it has grown into a company with a diverse team of engineers, designers and data scientists that have been recognized on several occasions with a Webby Award in 2016, two Webby honors in 2014 and 2015, and a Choice (American Library Association) Outstanding Academic Title in 2019.
Dr. Beveridge earned a PhD, MPhil, and Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. He first studied economics at the institution and switched to sociology. He earned a fellowship grant and traveled to Zambia with his friend, Tony Overthall, to study men in business in Africa. They ended up publishing a book with Present University Press. Since then, he has always incorporated economic phenomena from a sociological point of view. While matriculating, he published content with the Yale Daily News. He has served as a New York Times demographic and census consultant since 1993, and in this time has been cited more than 1,000 times. In addition to teaching at Queens College, Dr. Beveridge commenced his academic career at Columbia University. As recently of 2020, he has received accolades from the New York State Complete Count Commission from the 2020 census.
