Russell W. Warner, Special Education and Physical Education Teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in special education and physical education.

Mr. Warner was always involved in sports when he was younger, he was a baseball player in college and attended college on a scholarship. It was a natural progression to education. During his time in college, he had shoulder surgery, which got him interested in athletic training during his rehabilitation stage. He decided to change his major to secondary education with physical education and health. His father was also a sports writer his entire life, so naturally, Mr. Warner had a love for sports as well. When he began his student teaching, he knew immediately that was his calling. He earned a Master of Science in behavior disorders from West Virginia Wesleyan-West Virginia University in 1993. Upon graduation, Mr. Warner became certified in behavior disorders, athletic training, elementary education, secondary education, and adult education.

Mr. Warner worked as a volunteer coach for 250+ kids in our school system teaching them the fundamentals of archery and developing competition teams for elementary, middle school and high school age kids, which he still does. These teams have developed into outstanding groups competing and winning at the state and national levels of competition. While coaching, the teams became state champions at the elementary and middle school level. He also coached the middle school team to top 12 finishes at the National and World Competition levels. He has had 11 students place in the Top 15 in the Nation between the years of 2006 to 2020. Mr. Warner started working with Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School in 1984, as a special education and physical education teacher, remaining in those positions until 2014.
