Dr. Frankel was focused and driven. She always had the goal of making a difference in her work, writings, and teaching material. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from City College of New York in 1956. She then went to John Hopkins University and received a Master of Arts in 1958. In 1965, she received a Doctorate of Philosophy from The University of Chicago.

Dr. Frankel’s profession requires a commitment to the subject. Rather than simply being a professor, doing research is very important. One must enjoy it. It is a solitary occupation and a lot of work is done outside the classroom, which consists of a great deal of publishing. She began her career as an assistant professor with the University of Pennsylvania in 1965 and remained with the institution until her retirement in 2014. She has held the positions of associate professor, professor of South Asian Studies, founding director of the Center of Advanced Study of India, and Madan Lal Sobti Professor. Dr. Frankel has been an author, editor, and contributor to numerous books. She has recently authored, “When Nehru Looked East; Origins of India-US Suspicion and India-China Rivalry,” which was published in 2019. As a testament to her success, Dr. Frankel has received a scholar-in-residence from Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars from 1997 to 1998 and 2006 to 2007. She has also received grants from the Social Science Research Council, the Smithsonian Institution, and the American Institute of Indian Studies. Dr. Frankel has been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Politics and Who’s Who in America.
