Katie K. Gallagher, Professor at Johnson County Community College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business.
Prof. Gallagher chose this particular career because her grandmother was a teacher and she has a lot of people in her family that are teachers. She started as an executive for the Girls Scouts of the United States of America, when one of the fathers asked her to come and teach for him. He listened to the speeches she gave to Girl Scout leaders and the kids and knew she would make a great teacher. He was a mentor and a retired colonel who recruited her to be a teacher. That is how she got started. Prof. Gallagher earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and communications from the University of Nebraska. She continued with her education receiving a Master of Business Administration from Creighton University in 1987.
The greatest career achievement that Prof. Gallagher is most proud of is creating an introduction to business course that transfers to four-year schools. While in college, she switched from journalism to business and they did not have that course so, when she took an accounting course she did not understand what debt, credit, and economics was. She created an introduction class that covers all of those topics so that anyone can take it. Since 1999, Prof. Gallagher has been an associate professor and business teacher at Johnson County Community College. She previously held the position of professor at Metropolitan Community College from 1988 to 1999. As a testament to her success, Prof. Gallagher received a Freedom Foundation Good Citizen Award and was named a Sam Walton Fellow. She has also been listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women.
