Maxine Brinkert Tann Symens, retired Teacher at Pringhar Community School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in secondary education.

When Mrs. Symens graduated, high school education was not the field she wanted to go into, she wanted to study law or veterinarian medicine. She applied to two of the best schools for both law and veterinarian medicine, and couldn’t get in because she was a woman. Her father was a deciding factor, he said I think you would be a good teacher. This led her to start that path and she loved it. Mrs. Symens began her journey by earning a Bachelor of Science Magna Cum Laude from Westmar College in 1970. After realizing she couldn’t go to school for veterinary medicine or law she earned over 30 hours of graduate credits in elementary/secondary education social science, English and science. Upon completion of college, she became a certified teacher in Iowa.

Mrs. Symens started out as an elementary teacher in 1949 for the Rural School O’Brien Co. and remained until 1954. She then became an elementary teacher at Gaza Community School from 1954 to 1960. In 1960, she became a secondary teacher with Primghar Community School, where she remained until her retirement in 1981. After retirement, Mrs. Symens decided to keep working but in a different field of work. She opened Slim-N-Trim in 1982 staying on as a fitness salon owner for five years before opening a restaurant called George Café in 1985, running it until 1990. In 1988, she opened Pizza Ranch, running the business until 1996. After her venture with restaurants, she started working in the Network Marketing Division of Espial in 1997 staying on for two years. In 2000, Mrs. Symens became the director of Costal Vacations for three years, the director of Delmax Liquidations for a year in 2004 and the director of Delmax Debt Arbitration from 2004 to 2005. As a testament to her success, Mrs. Symens received a History Award and an Excellence in Education Award. She is also listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in America and the 37th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Business.
