Dr. James J Bolton, Department Chair at Odessa College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pre-health sciences.
Dr. Bolton left research to pursue education because he knew that it would add more value to educating the younger generation, and it was a better fit for him as opposed to working in a laboratory. He started out as a research assistant at Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University in 2000 and remained until 2004. In 2004, he became a research scientist for the USDA-ARS for the next four years. From there, he became a molecular biologist at Cornell University from 2009 until 2011. In 2014, he moved into education becoming the science department chair for Odessa College, where he remains to this day.
Before pursuing his career, Dr. Bolton earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Wiley College in 1999. He continued on receiving a Master of Science in molecular genetics from The University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2003. Rounding out his education, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University in 2008. Alongside his career, Dr. Bolton makes time to help in the community. He is a volunteer chaplain, minister and science fair judge and he contributes to the West Texas Food Bank and Harmony Home. As a testament to his success, Dr. Bolton was nominated for an Outstanding Faculty Award in 2013, received the Pioneer in Education Award in 2016 and was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success in 2017. He has also been inducted into the Genetic Society of America, the American Society for Cell Biology, the National Society for Leadership and Success and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
