Okechukwu Ifediora, Nephrologist and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nephrology and medical education.
Dr. Ifediora wanted to become a doctor because he recognized it as a well-respected career growing up in Nigeria. Knowing he wanted to make his family and community proud, he first earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Ife in 1978, and an MBChB in 1981. He completed an internship at the General Hospital and additionally worked as a medical officer at the Apex Medical Center before deciding to relocate to the United States to advance his career. From 1987 to 1990, Dr. Ifediora served in a residency at Harlem Hospital and followed that with a two-year fellowship in nephrology at the Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia. From 1992 to 1997, he leveraged his skills and expertise as a nephrology consultant in Monroe, Louisiana before accepting consulting and vice president positions at Renal Associates. Furthermore, he is a diplomate American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Nephrology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ifedioras has had many career achievements. One that stands out to him is being elected as a fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1996, which validated his purpose in coming to the United States. In addition, he is proud of establishing the first hemodialysis unit in his state of Anambra, with a population of three about million people, and working with a hospital that predominantly provided rural health care as other highlights. From 1993 to 2003, Dr. Ifediora taught as an adjunct assistant clinical professor at Louisiana State University. Additional career achievements include receiving the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award in 1994, the Nigerian Medical Association Prize from the University of Ife, and the Nigerian National Merit Award for Academic Excellence form 1975-1981.
