Daniel F. Danzl, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in accidental hypothermia.
Appreciating how emergency medicine treated everyone identically and acted as a safety net for society, Dr. Danzl has been a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Louisville (UofL) since 1989, as well as a chair emeritus of the Department of Emergency Medicine as of 2020. He began his professional career as an emergency medicine intern at the Peoria School of Medicine, now known as the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, in 1976, completing this role in one year before becoming the chief resident at UofL’s School of Medicine from 1978 to 1979. He then joined the university full-time as an assistant professor from 1979 to 1983, associate professor from 1983 to 1989, and professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine from 1991 to 2020. During this time, Dr. Danzl has also been an associate professor of the Department of Surgery since 1991, among other roles.
Prior to the start of his career, Dr. Danzl pursued a formal education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude with high honors, in 1972. He then attended Ohio State University, where he attained an MD in 1976. Following this, he became a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1977, licensed in the States of Indiana and Kentucky in 1977, and a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine from 1981 to 1991. He has since been recertified numerous times. A member of myriad editorial boards for professional publications, Dr. Danzl is best known for his research on hypothermia. A member of numerous organizations related to his field, including founding the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine, he is the recipient of several honors and accolades throughout his career. He was notably selected for inclusion in many editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
