John Hyde, Brown Professor of History Emeritus at Williams College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in history education.
With more than 35 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Hyde is currently a Brown professor of history emeritus at Williams College. He served the institution for his entire career, starting in 1959 as an instructor, and rose to the rank of an assistant professor, an associate professor and a full professor in 1973. From 1963 to 1967, he served as the dean of freshmen, and from 1967 to 1970 he was the dean of the college. Additionally, Dr. Hyde acted as a department chair from 1982 to 1986, and in 1989 he accepted the designation of a Brown professor of history emeritus.
As a young man, Dr. Hyde dropped out of his higher education to serve in the United States Navy during the Korean War, where he remained from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1955. This meant he would have access to tuition assistance, which opened up his career options, and he was divided between pursuing foreign services or teaching. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history from Williams College in 1956, Dr. Hyde took the recommendation of a coworker and matriculated at the University of Minnesota, where he received a Master of Arts in history in 1957. After finding he enjoyed scholarly life, he received a scholarship from Harvard University and obtained a PhD in history in 1963.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Hyde maintains affiliation to numerous organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Kansas Historical Society, the Canadian Historical Association and Phi Beta Kappa. In his free time, he enjoys riding trains around the world, and where he is unable to travel by train, he books passage on freighters. As a further testament to his success and stature, Dr. Hyde has been selected for inclusion in the 44th through 53rd editions of Who’s Who in America.
