Dr. Mohamed E. El Deeb, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in dentistry education.

Convinced to enter the field by his boss, Dr. El Deeb has been a professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota since 1991. He began his career instructing oral surgery at Al-Azhar University in Cairo in 1973, where he remained for three years before becoming an assistant professor at his current institution from 1980 to 1985. He then directed the Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic from 1982 to 1996 and served as president of the Upper Midwest Chapter of the American Society of Dental Anaesthesiology for four years, during which he also moved up the ranks at the University of Minnesota to an associate professor and director of research from 1985 to 1990. Dr. El Deeb also directed the university’s dental implant program from 1989 to 1991, and was vice president of the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities Association for one year and an international consultant for the World Hospital in Cairo for two years.

In addition to this tenure, Dr. El Deeb was also on the staff for various other facilities including the University of Minnesota Hospital, M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, the Cook Clinic, United Hospital, Abbot Northwest Hospital and others. Moreover, he served on the editorial board for the Cleft Palate Journal and the Saudi Medical Journal. Prior to the start of his career, Dr. El Deeb pursued a formal education at the Cairo University School of Dentistry, graduating at the top of his class in 1972. He then attended the University of Minnesota, where he attained a Master of Science in dentistry and completed the residency training program in 1979.

Active in his local community, Dr. El Deeb has instructed basic and advanced cardiac life support training through the American Heart Association of Minneapolis since 1981, and served on the board of directors for the Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic since 1983. He has also published over 100 research papers, abstracts and textbook chapters to professional journals and scientific publications, as well four or five educational papers in 2019, one of which discussed the future of dentistry in Egypt. A skilled athlete in his younger years, in 1967, Dr. El Deeb ranked second in light-heavyweight judo and equestrian jumping in a national high school tournament.

A member of myriad organizations related to his field, Dr. El Deeb was awarded the Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic Service Award in 1986 and 1991. Also in 1991, he became a diplomate of the International College of Oral Implantologists and the American Society of Osseointegration. A recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. El Deeb was selected for inclusion in the second edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
