Maureen Mattson, physical education instructor at Pittsburg High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in physical education.
With more than 35 years of professional experience, Ms. Mattson has been a physical education instructor with Pittsburg High School since 1986. In addition to her primary role, she held a number of other positions with the school including unified sports coach since 2015, assistant athletic director from 2010 to 2012, varsity girls’ volleyball coach from 2010 to 2011 and 1986 to 1994, girls’ basketball coach from 1986 to 2004 and assistant principal from 1998 to 1999. She also held a number of positions at Diablo Valley College, including physical education instructor and women’s basketball coach from 2004 to 2010. Earlier in her career, Ms. Mattson was a girls’ basketball, volleyball and softball coach at San Benito High School from 1984 to 1986, and the aquatics program manager and swim instructor of the City of Hollister Parks and Recreation Department from 1981 to 1985.
Ms. Mattson first pursued an education at the University of California Berkeley, where she obtained a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1984. She continued her studies at California State University, earning a Master of Physical Education in 1992. She has also completed certification in sportsmanship, bullying, hazing and inappropriate behaviors, sudden cardiac arrest, the role of parents in sports, positive sport parenting and the fundamentals of coaching, as well as the California state component by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Ms. Mattson is also a registered athletic administrator with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Mattson has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the California Coaches Association and the California State Athletic Directors Association. She has also been active with the North Coast section of the Basketball Management Committee, and she has served on the Friends of the Pirate bingo board, the State CIF Basketball advisory committee, the WASC leadership team, and the attendance and tardy committee at Pittsburg High School. Ms. Mattson is further a Special Olympic mentor for the Unified Champion Schools Special Olympics U.S. Youth Ambassadors.
Throughout her career, Ms. Mattson has been recognized for her contributions. The recipient of the Pittsburg Unified School District Equity Award, she has been inducted into the Hollister High School Hall of Fame. Ms. Mattson was also named Teacher of the Year by Contra Costa County and the Pittsburg Unified School District, Volunteer of the Year by the Special Olympics Northern California School Partnership Program and BVAL Coach of the Year.
