Leo Rouse, Professor, Dean Emeritus and Consultant with the American Dental Education Association has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dentistry.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Rouse attended the Howard University College of Dentistry from 1969 to 1973, where he earned a DDS. He began serving in the United States Army in 1972, continuing his education at the Walson Army Hospital at Fort Dix in New Jersey from 1976 to 1978. He rose to the rank of a colonel, serving as a commander and chief operational officer of the dental command for two years before his retirement in 1997.

Following his military career, Dr. Rouse began as a dean and professor at Howard University in 1997. This esteemed historically black university provides its diverse student body with the educational foundation necessary to excel in their career pursuits. Dr. Rouse contributed to the institution for more than 15 years, starting as a senior scholar-in-residence and a consultant with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in 2016, where he continues to work to this day.

In addition to his primary pursuits, Dr. Rouse is an examiner consultant and member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners’ exam development committee. He is also the chair of the ADEAGies Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He maintains affiliations with numerous professional organizations in his field, including being a fellow of the American College of Dentists, as well as a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Examiners, the American Dental Education Association and the National Dental Association, among others.

Dr. Rouse has been recognized for his career achievements with a Student Clinician ADA Achievement Award, a Trailblazer Award and a Howard University College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumni Award. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Western University of Health Sciences in 2014. Dr. Rouse credits numerous mentors throughout his career, including Dr. Paul Friedman, Joseph L. Henry, G. Craig Seaford, Don C. Hobaugh, William Kate, and Ezra Merritt. He considers the highlight of his career to be seeing his students achieve success in dentistry, and he continues to maintain contact with many of his students.
