Jan-Ake Gustafsson, Professor at the University of Houston, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists and Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.

Dr. Gustafsson graduated from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 1968 with a Doctor of Philosophy and went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine three years later. He was Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition for many years and built up the South Campus of the Karolinska Institute in Huddinge. In 1992, Gustafsson obtained the Anders Jahre Prize from the University of Oslo and in 1998, he received the Soderberg Prize in Stockholm. In 2002, Gustafsson was elected Honorary Member of the US Academy of Sciences.

In 2009, he moved to the USA where he holds the title of Robert A. Welch Professor and acts as the Founding Director of the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling at the University of Houston. Throughout his career, he has been honored numerous times for his successful efforts. In 2009, he was presented the Grand Nordic Fernstrom Prize from the University of Lund and the Award of Merit from the Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund. In 2011, the Karolinska Institute awarded him the Grand Silver Medal and he became Honorary Doctor of Medicine at the University of Turku in Finland. More recently, in 2015, Dr. Gustafsson was named Distinguished Professor of Dalian Medical University in China. Furthermore, he has been awarded Honorary Doctorates at the Universities of Athens in Greece and Milan in Italy.

Dr. Gustafsson is well known for his groundbreaking work on the structure of the glucocorticoid receptor and for his discoveries of the estrogen receptor beta and liver X receptor beta, both of which are involved against cancer. In 2019, Dr. Gustafsson was honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his numerous professional achievements.
