Wei-Kai Lai, PhD, Professor at the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics.
A leading expert in mathematics education, Dr. Lai has been a professor with the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie since 2018, having been an associate professor since 2015, an assistant professor since 2010, and an instructor since 2008. In addition to his primary roles, he has served as a mentor and vice chair of two-year colleges for the Mathematics Association of America Southeastern Mentor Networks, and he has been an organizer of the Carolina Mathematics Seminar. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has given many presentations in his areas of expertise.
Dr. Lai has served as a paper reviewer for numerous journals, including the Canadian Open Calculus Journal, the Canadian Open Pure Mathematics Journal, and the Canadian Open Analytic Geometry Journal. He has also reviewed for the Canadian Open Statistics and Mathematics Journal, the Journal of Mathematics and System Science, the Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science, and Advance in Pure Mathematics.
Dr. Lai first pursued an education with National Taiwan University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1998. He continued his studies with National Taiwan Normal University, completing a Master of Science in mathematics in 2000. He subsequently relocated to the United States, earning a PhD in mathematics from the University of Mississippi in 2008. He is a member of the Mathematics Association of America and the Carolina Mathematics Seminar.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lai has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the Denise Shaw Excellence in Research Award, he was given a USC Salkehatchie Service Award and a John J. Duffy Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Excellence in Scholarship Award, and he was named a USC Salkehatchie Professor of the Year. He attributes much of his success to his love of teaching and for his continuing commitment to it.
