Fernando Colon-Navarro, Professor of Law at the University of Puerto Rico Law School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Law.
With 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Colon-Navarro has been a professor of law and the director of the Master of Laws program and immigration development at the University of Puerto Rico Law School since 2012, also serving as a visiting professor since 2005 and associate dean from 2003 to 2012. In addition to his primary roles, he was an associate professor at the Thurgood Marshall School at Texas Southern University from 1991 to 2008, where he was also clinical director from 1992 to 1995, and he was a visiting associate professor with Texas Wesleyan University School of Law from 1999 to 2000.
From 1987 to 1991, Mr. Colon-Navarro was a clinical instructor and the director of the Harvard Law School Immigration Clinic, and from 1986 to 1987 he was an assistant attorney for the Chicago Board of Education. He previously served as a staff attorney with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 1983 to 1986, having held the same position with the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis since 1981. Earlier in his career, he was a law clerk and trial assistant for the Hennepin County Public Defenders Office from 1979 to 1980.
Mr. Colon-Navarro first pursued an education with St. John’s University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. He then joined the University of Minnesota Law School, completing a Juris Doctor in 1981. He continued his education with Harvard Law School, receiving a Master of Education in 1990 and earning a Master of Laws in 1991. He has been admitted to practice in the states of Illinois and Minnesota, as well as before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Hispanic Bar Association.
Throughout his career, Mr. Colon-Navarro has been recognized for his contributions. Named an Outstanding Visiting Professor and Outstanding Evening Professor by the Wesleyan University School of Law, he was also named Professor of the Year and Outstanding Advisor and given the Lex Justa Award by the Hispanic Law Student Association at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. The Chicano Law Association has thrice named him Professor of the Year, and the Chicano Law Student Association gave him an Achievement Award.
